Cystic fibrosis related diabetes is a major morbidity for patients with cystic fibrosis and negatively impacts mortality. The mechanistic basis for this form of diabetes is not well understood. In this project we are analyzing the hypothesis that islet inflammation leads to islet amyloid deposition and beta cell failure in patients with CFRD. Samples from the nPOD repository are being stained for both amyloid and interleukin 1 beta. In the future we will look at additional inflammatory mediators in the islets.
